The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.'. Mary Shelly wrote many of these big ideas in her story of Frankenstein.
One of the main themes in the story is the one of friendship. Mary Shelly thinks that friendship is a very important thing to have in ones life so it becomes very important in the novel. Here's an example:
Once Frankenstein completes his monster, and he then thinks that he makes a mistake, he gets frighted and upset by the monster. Not long later he goes into town to an inn and sees his friend Henry Clerval. He gets instantly relieved at the sight of his friend and it's like a breath of fresh air in his life. It's a breath of fresh air because the last few months of his life or more have been spent with what most people would say doing very unhealthy activities (digging around dead bodies, not leaving his home, spending no time with family or friends.
The second part of the friendship tone is that you can count on friends. This theme shows itself after Frankenstein meets his old friend Clerval after becoming very sickly during and after the creation of the monster. Frankenstein invites Clerval back to his apartment, and where they discover that the monster is no where to be found. After these events, Frankenstein collapses in a nervous fever of some sort. His friend Henry Cleval then spends the next few months nursing him back to health. Clerval dropped everything in his life to help his friend when he needs it. This very much shows the tone of you can count on friends.

In the novel, the monster has no friends, which is in juxtaposition to Victor Frankenstein who has friends who will drop everything to help him.
Picture Left: Friendship is a very important tone in Frankenstein, as this children's book elaborates on. Video Below: interesting video to get an overview of Tone and Mood in literature. |
