Complications are a circumstance that complicates something; a difficulty.
These are very, very common literature. They take a simple story such as a man creating a being and turn it into a complicated and riveting story by adding complexities and other story details that make the interesting to read. Not as many people would want to read a story where everything works out perfectly and nothing bad really happens. This would also make the story much shorter. An example of a complication: The monster turns out scary and not what Victor was expecting. Because of this, Victor was scared of the monster and could not raise it correctly. If this complication had not occurred, then Victor might have been able to raise a more well behaved and happy monster. Lots of complications add to the story by causing different chain-of-events. |
An example of a pocket watch that is a simple time keeping device, but becomes complex because of all the complications of it's gears. The watch can be viewed as a metaphor to the novel, which is made interesting and complex because of it's complications.
